Individual Therapy

Individual therapy involves regular meetings with a therapist, usually on a weekly basis. But beyond that, therapy is a time that’s just for you.  A place where you can come and be yourself—whatever that self looks like at any given time.  You don’t have to hold it together or pretend to be someone or something that you’re not.  The uniqueness of the therapeutic relationship provides a space for you to get perspective and feedback that you may not get anywhere else.

Therapy is most beneficial when you are an active participant.  A good portion of the work of therapy happens outside of sessions.  Meaning, you take time to think through what comes up for you, do homework assignments (i.e. journal exercises, reading, etc.), and take what you learn in session back into your life.

Please contact me if you’d like to discuss your situation or schedule an appointment.  Please note that I am only taking clients for my waiting list at this time.

Group Therapy

Group therapy provides a safe environment for you to apply what you’re learning in individual therapy.  Because of this it has the potential to greatly enhance your individual work.

Some groups are on-going process groups and others are topical and time-limited, usually 8-12 weeks in duration. You don’t have to be one of my clients to attend group, but you do need to be in individual therapy. If you’re interested in finding out more about group please contact me.

Current Groups

Women’s Group – This is an ongoing process group for  women that focuses on developmental trauma, codependency and family of origin issues. The group meets Thursdays 5:30pm-7:00pm and is $65 per week.

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy/Equine Assisted Learning

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) and Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) are experiential approaches that address goals using the collaborative efforts of a horse professional, a licensed therapist, horses, and the client(s). EAP and EAL differ only in the session objectives; EAP has a therapeutic focus while EAL has a general personal development focus. Both EAP and EAL are suitable for individuals and groups.  Whether EAP or EAL, each client-driven session includes hands-on, non-riding activities with the horses, along with processing and discussion of feelings, behaviors, and patterns. These activities provide a context for you to learn about yourself and connect to your story in a way that often is not possible in the office. The meanings that you’ll give to particular activities or interactions with the horses can yield insights into patterns of behavior and relationships.

Because horses are prey animals, they are extremely intuitive and sensitive to their environments and to what’s going on with the humans around them. During EAP/EAL sessions horses will provide honest and non-judgemental feedback regarding what is happening emotionally and/or behaviorally for participants.  And horses do best when the humans with them are honest about what they’re experiencing in the moment. This can facilitate participants being able to be present and connect more deeply with what’s happening for them.

EAP/EAL sessions are held in collaboration with Katie Fallon of Bridle Paths (http://www.bridlepathsva.org/).  EAP sessions are typically 60-minutes and cost $250. The fee for EAL sessions vary depending on the size of the group and length of session. Please contact me if you have questions about EAP/EAL or would like to schedule a session.

Therapist Counseling and Consultation

Is there a particular countertransference issue that keeps coming up for you?  Do you notice that there are parts of your clients’ stories that you tend to shy away from or not enter into very deeply? A reason for that could be that unexamined parts of your story are unconsciously getting in your way. Some of the best training that I’ve received didn’t come from graduate school or workshops—it came from doing my own work.

I know for sure that I am the therapist I am today because I’ve walked and lived my own journey, and that allows me to show up for clients in a way that I wouldn’t be able to otherwise. Head knowledge alone doesn’t impact lives; connecting soul to soul is also an important part of the therapeutic process (And I would argue is the most important part).  Understanding and working through our own history is a big part of what allows us to connect with clients and their stories in a deep and meaningful way.

Whether it’s a specific countertransference issue or an unexamined part of your story, I will provide a place for you to take a look at things that may be coming up for you in your work with clients.  I offer both ongoing therapy and periodic consultation. Contact me if you’d like to schedule and appointment.

EMDR

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an effective method to help your brain target and process disturbing experiences in a way other treatment modalities don’t. For example, verbal processing alone doesn’t always provide an effective avenue for resolution of a traumatic experience.

EMDR sessions are 50 or 75 minutes long and are $170 or $255 per session respectively. For more information about EMDR, please see the FAQ page below. If you’re a new client coming to see me for EMDR you will receive an email with information about necessary paperwork to complete before your first session.

Myers-Briggs® Assessments

  • Do you ever wonder why you speak before you’ve thought of what you were going to say?
  • Do you ever get frustrated when you’re partner doesn’t understand what you’re saying even though you feel like you’re being very clear?
  • Do you find that it’s difficult for you when things don’t go as planned?  Or when things are too planned?
  • When making decisions do you find that you focus on logic and data even though it’d be most beneficial to focus on people and circumstances? Or vice versa?
If any of these questions resonate with you then you may find the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®) a helpful resource. Most likely you’ve heard of the MBTI® somewhere along the way, maybe in college or at work. But many who are familiar with it, don’t have an understanding of what it really is. And my experience has been that even those who’ve taken the assessment often aren’t clear about their Type and how it impacts their life. I offer the MBTI® assessment and consultation in a way that will help you understand Type in general and your Type in particular.

The MBTI® is a tool to help you understand the ways that you operate in your daily life such as how you make decisions, your approach to conflict, and how you communicate. All of which are things that are important in both your personal and professional life.

Some benefits of knowing your Type include:

  • Clarity about your process for making decisions and how that may impact those around you
  • A better understanding of yourself which can potentially provide a richer exerience in therapy
  • It provides a common language on which to build clear communication and navigate conflict (this can be particularly beneficial to couples)
  • It’s a way to understand personality differences and use them constructively rather than let those differences get in your way.

The fee for an MBTI® assessment and consultation is $175 for an individual and $200 for a couple. The fee includes the assessment report, handouts and a 90 minute consultation. Contact me to schedule an assessment. Note: If you are a therapist referring a client to take the assessment, you’re welcome to sit in on the consultation if that would be helpful.

If you have questions or would like to make an appointment, please get in touch today.
